SPRING CLEAN YOUR LEGAL CAREER

Why it’s Time you Spring Cleaned your Career

With April fast approaching, now is the perfect time to undergo a full spring clean. From tidying your kitchen cupboards to cleaning out your wardrobe, a spring clean is an opportunity to reorganise your home and prepare for the upcoming year. But, why stop there? While it is undeniably satisfying to wipe away that layer of dust that’s built up over winter, a spring clean doesn’t have to just be applied to the interior of your home. In fact, a spring clean can be a fantastic way to reorganise and reinvigorate other areas of your life, including your career.

Particularly for busy professionals in the legal sector, a spring clean can be the ideal opportunity to re-set career goals and work out how to achieve them.

How to Spring Clean your Legal Career

“Dust off” your values

As the first step to any spring clean is dusting, why not start with “dusting off” your values? Connecting with what you find most meaningful and rewarding is a great first step to checking that your career trajectory is the best fit for your life goals. You may have a yearning for more control over your client base, or want a bit more freedom in setting fee structures that fit your client’s circumstances or be looking for a work pattern that allows you to work at times and in ways that make you most productive. These things may suggest a more entrepreneurial career path could fit with your personal values. Here’s a light-touch quiz to help identify what type of entrepreneur you might be.

“Tidy up” your goals

Next, you could roll your sleeves up and organise your career goals, working up the steps required to achieve them. These goals could be anything from developing your know-how in a particular practice area to pursuing a promotion at your current firm. It could also be that you’re ready for a change of firm or even to launch your own practice.

“Polish” your skillset

During your personal “spring clean”, you can take time to identify which skills you need to develop to enable you to achieve your career goals. Including these in your Continuing Competence or CPD plan and reflecting on your progress in your Annual Declaration will give you a good means to stay on track with your career development.
